Rain Delay Golf Guide
hello!
Whether it's No. 2, a guest round at CCNC, or Mid Pines, Pine Needles or Tobacco Road, you came to play golf. If the forecast has other plans, don't worry: a rain delay here still beats a bluebird day most places.
I'm Lex Fowler, a REALTOR® with The Foundry Group at Compass, a transplant here in Southern Pines, and Moore County hype person for all things community and life here.
A few rainy-day favorites
The forecast & game plan
Read the radar, then make the call
- Check weather.gov the night before and the morning of
- Rain after 2 p.m.? Tee off early and finish first
- Lightning nearby means off the course until the all-clear
- Rain all day? Make it a Plan B day
- Sandy Sandhills soil drains fast, so a morning shower may not wash out the afternoon
- Ask about cart-path-only rules after heavy rain
- Earliest tee time
- Indoor backup booked
- At CCNC or another member club? Ask your host or the pro shop about guest tee times & wet-weather rules
- Ask any course about its rain-check policy
Local hidden gems
Rainy-Day Gems
These are the spots locals actually go when the course closes. Downtown Southern Pines is the easiest bar crawl in the county: park once and walk Broad Street.
Rainy nights
Rainy Night Out
Teeing off early tomorrow? Keep the night low-key and stay close to home base.
Pick a game. Most downtown bars have the big games on during football season. Grab a table with a TV and settle in.
You vs. the arcade. Skee-ball, shuffleboard, pool, Stern pinball and retro arcade games, plus 24+ beers on tap at Rec Room Bar + Arcade (750 SW Broad St).
Cocktails downtown. Cork (143 NE Broad St) pours some of the best cocktails in town in the old Princess Theater. Enter down the side alley; closed Sundays and Mondays.
Dinner in the Village. The Village's Pinehurst Brewing Co. has house beer and barbecue under one roof. Easy dinner, easy walk home if you're staying nearby.
Rain in the forecast
Beat the Storm
Storms on the way? Get 18 in early, then follow the rain indoors.
Start early. Summer storms here often build in the afternoon, so grab the first tee time you can get.
College football. Many fall Saturdays bring big ACC and SEC matchups. Find a bar with the game on and keep an eye on the radar.
Fire up the simulator. With Trackman sims and bays for up to eight, Double Eagle (208 Brucewood Rd) fits the whole group. Book ahead.
Plan a show. Movies, tribute bands, comedy and live music at the historic Sunrise Theater (250 NW Broad St). Check the calendar before you go.
Find dinner downtown. Park once in downtown Southern Pines and walk Broad Street for dinner and drinks. Embers BBQ is a crowd-pleaser for a hungry group.
All-day washout
The Washout Plan
When the radar is green all day, plan around golf you can do with a roof over your head.
Pinehurst's Hall of Fame. Morning pick: the World Golf Hall of Fame at the USGA's Golf House in Pinehurst. Open 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; $10, or $5 with an NC ID.
Next up: a simulator rematch. Friendly rematch at Double Eagle to settle the trip's bets. Book a bay ahead; every golfer in town has the same idea.
Matinee at the Sunrise. Afternoon movies and shows make the Sunrise Theater an easy rainy-day pick. Check what's playing.
Catch the game. Most bars will have games on during football season. Rec Room's shuffleboard and pinball fill the commercials.
Plan the nightcap. Check hours first: Cork is closed Sun–Mon and Seaboard Freight Speakeasy is closed Mon–Tue. Can you stay an extra day? The course is often perfect once it clears.
Rain-out checklist
Before you go
Run through this before you leave home, and re-check the forecast at weather.gov the morning of your round.
Head start on tee times. Move to the earliest tee time on any stormy day and ask your course about its rain-check policy when you confirm.
Two indoor backups. Tee up a Double Eagle simulator bay and check what's on at the Sunrise Theater.
The rain kit. Load the bag with rain gloves, a rain jacket, an umbrella and a second pair of golf shoes.
Your ride & a bonus day. Sort out a designated driver or rides between your course, where you're staying and downtown. Ask about a late checkout or an extra night for a bonus round.

Your local in the Sandhills
Could you actually live here someday?
A lot of people who live here first came for a golf trip. If you catch yourself browsing listings between rounds, I know the streets where you can hear the first tee from the front porch.
Text me anytime. I'm happy to talk golf, neighborhoods or where to grab a beer, and I can connect you with trusted local vendors if you ever make the move.
