Living in Southern Pines

Moore County, North Carolina

What it's really like to live here: downtown, horse country, golf communities and newer neighborhoods, plus what to check before you buy.

hello!

Southern Pines is the town we chose to call home, and I still love driving down Broad Street. It's small enough that you'll run into friends at the coffee shop, with enough going on that weekends never feel empty. Whether you want a cottage you can walk downtown from, a few acres near the horse trails or a golf course out the back door, there's a corner of Southern Pines for you. Here's how I'd describe each one to a friend.

I'm Lex Fowler, a REALTOR® with The Foundry Group at Compass, and a Southern Pines resident who would be happy to show you around.

Southern Pines Neighborhoods

Every home is different, but each part of town has its own feel. Here's a quick overview to help you narrow things down before we tour.

Downtown & in town Entrance to Seaboard Freight in downtown Southern Pines, NC

Tree-lined streets within walking or biking distance of Broad Street, with a mix of cottages, older brick ranches and renovated homes.

Good fit if: you want to walk to dinner, cocktails at spots like Seaboard Freight, the park and the farmers market, and you love a house with some history.

Keep in mind: older homes can mean older systems, so a thorough inspection is a must.

Weymouth

The leafy, established area around the Weymouth Center, with mature pines, many larger lots and character homes.

Good fit if: you want quiet streets, big trees and a short drive to downtown.

Keep in mind: lots vary a lot in size and setting, so we'll look closely at each one.

Horse country

Farms, hunt boxes and acreage around Youngs Road and May Road, near the Walthour-Moss Foundation's trails.

Good fit if: you ride, drive or just want land, pasture and long views.

Keep in mind: many properties are on well and septic, and barns, fencing and footing all need their own inspection.

Golf communities

Neighborhoods built around a course, such as Mid South Club (gated, with an Arnold Palmer-designed course), Longleaf Golf & Family Club and Talamore, plus homes near Pine Needles and Mid Pines.

Good fit if: you want amenities, views and a neighborhood social scene.

Keep in mind: HOA dues, club memberships and rules vary widely, so we'll read the documents together.

East side & Fort Bragg Road

Newer subdivisions and newer construction toward Weymouth Woods and Fort Bragg Road, including areas like Sandhurst South.

Good fit if: you want a newer home and an easier drive toward post.

Keep in mind: check HOA rules, and listen for training noise closer to post.

Morganton Road & west

The growing corridor between downtown and Pinehurst, near Morganton Park South's shopping and new apartments, with established neighborhoods nearby.

Good fit if: you want convenience to errands and an easy drive to Pinehurst.

Keep in mind: traffic picks up near the shopping centers at busy times.

Southern Pines FAQ

Your Questions, Answered

What's the difference between Southern Pines and Pinehurst?

They're neighbors, and many people work in one and live in the other. Southern Pines has a bustling, walkable downtown and horse country. Pinehurst is a historic village built around golf, with a quieter, park-like village center. I'm happy to tour both so you can feel the difference.

Is Southern Pines walkable?

Parts of it are very walkable, especially the in-town neighborhoods near Broad Street. Most of the newer and golf neighborhoods are car-dependent, though many have walking paths of their own.

How far is Southern Pines from Fort Bragg?

Roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on where you report on post. My PCS to Fort Bragg guide covers the commute in more detail.

Can I buy a horse property in Southern Pines?

Yes, horse country is one of the things that makes Southern Pines special. We'll look closely at barns, fencing, pasture, well and septic, and access to the trails.

Which schools serve a home I'm looking at?

School assignment follows the address, so I always recommend checking any home you're serious about with Moore County Schools directly. I'm happy to help you find the right contacts.

Are there new construction homes in Southern Pines?

Yes, there are newer communities on several sides of town. I can help with builder contracts, inspections on new builds and comparing new homes to resales.

Your neighbor in Southern Pines

Let's find your corner of town

Michigan was home first, but college brought me to the Carolinas and I never wanted to leave. When the military brought my husband, Max, and me to Southern Pines, what we thought was a temporary stop became the destination. Every move has taught me the house is only part of the decision. The neighborhood, the commute and the lifestyle matter just as much.

Before real estate, I spent eight years in public health and research, including time with the VA, where accuracy and deadlines were nonnegotiable. I bring that same discipline to every contract and closing, with The Foundry Group and Compass behind you.

Downtown or horse country? Let's tour both and see what feels like home!
