Living in Carthage
hello!
Carthage is small-town North Carolina at its best. The historic courthouse stands in a traffic circle at the center of town, old homes still tell the story of the town's buggy-making days, and the pace is slower than in Southern Pines or Pinehurst. If you want a quieter town, a little more room and don't mind a bit of a drive for dinner out, Carthage deserves a look. Here's how I'd describe each part of it to a friend.
I'm Lex Fowler, a REALTOR® with The Foundry Group at Compass, and I'd love to show you around Carthage.

Carthage Buyer Checklist
A few things that are worth confirming on every home here.
- Inside town limits or in the county? It affects taxes, services and zoning.
- Town water and sewer, or well and septic?
- A survey, especially on acreage
- Barns, fencing and outbuildings inspected separately
- HOA or no HOA, and any rental restrictions
- Planned development nearby
- Rules on livestock, fences and outbuildings
- Drive times to work, post and errands at the hours you'll actually drive
- Check the address with Moore County Schools, since assignment follows the address
- Distance to parks, the library and activities
- Main-floor bedroom options
Tip: Rural properties can come with things a listing won't mention, like easements, shared driveways or unclear property lines. On acreage, a survey during your Due Diligence Period is well worth it.
Carthage FAQ
Your Questions, Answered
What's it like living in Carthage compared with Southern Pines?
Carthage is quieter and more small-town, with a historic courthouse square instead of a busy downtown. Many residents drive to Southern Pines or Pinehurst for dining and shopping and come home to a little more space.
Can I buy land or a farm near Carthage?
Yes. There's farmland, pasture and wooded acreage around town. We'll look closely at wells, septic, surveys, easements and any barns or fencing.
Is there new construction in Carthage?
Yes, and more is proposed as the town grows. I can help with builder contracts, inspections on new builds and comparing new homes to resales.
How far is Carthage from Fort Bragg?
Carthage is in the northern part of the county, so the drive to post is longer than from Southern Pines. Map it to your actual building, and test it at rush hour if you can. My PCS to Fort Bragg guide covers the commute in more detail.
Which schools serve a home I'm looking at?
School assignment follows the address, so I always recommend checking any home you're serious about with Moore County Schools directly. I'm happy to help you find the right contacts.

Michigan was home first, but college brought me to the Carolinas and I never wanted to leave. When the military brought my husband, Max, and me to Southern Pines, what we thought was a temporary stop became the destination. Every move has taught me the house is only part of the decision. The neighborhood, the commute and the lifestyle matter just as much.
Before real estate, I spent eight years in public health and research, including time with the VA, where accuracy and deadlines were nonnegotiable. I bring that same discipline to every contract and closing, with The Foundry Group and Compass behind you.
